Mina Murray - Bram Stoker's Dracula 2 by EmilyParrishCostume Mina Murray - Bram Stoker's Dracula 2 by EmilyParrishCostume
Third Year Final University Projects
My other project was Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Bustle dress i designed for the character Mina Murray
based off of 1888's bustle dresses when the buste cage was at its most angular.

The colours and prints are influenced by ravens theres also some deep meaning behind the use of ravens but i'm not going to go into it right now :)

All the printing and beading and reverse applique and pleating was me. Yes all that pleating, i think i went a bit crazy!

Its all designed and made by me.
Modelled by my friend Ellis

There is no such thing as too much ruching, ruffling, pleating and more pleating! Indeed a good job, very gorgeous indeed; ah, all of it! The colours, the cut, the decorations, one must say it would be one's next choice for a dress!

Hehe, no idea where that came from, it's an expression I just spontaneously came up with a while back, and it stuck. The dress is fabulous.

Actually reminds me of a Sherlock Holmes story (The Copper Beeches) more than Mina, but I can see her in it too.

Wonderful! I love the bustles! I wonder how much would it be to get a costume from you? If you make them for people?

I love them too!, and honestly it would all depend on the fabrics wanted and how big, underwear to go with it, whether you wanted it designed as well ect..

Woah dat bustle! :D I love bustledresses of the 80's anyway but this one is just gooorgeous :D Totally impractical to walk and move around with I bet, but you look damn good, so who cares B-)

And lol it's a lot of pleating indeed xD But since they all have slightly different shades (nice detail btw ) it doesn't look like it's too much or anything like that ^^
Can I ask, if you have any idea of this, how long you work on a dress like this? More or less ofcourse :p

Apparently it wasn't difficult to move in, can you believe that! and quite comfortable so i'm told, which is a relief, whenever i make something i always try and make it as comfortable as possible, as you don't know how long she's got to wear it for!
Hmmm how long .... erm i made it over six months but that includes the other two third year projects as well as dissertations, file work, fundraising ect..
But if i had been working solely on this is wouldn't have taken that long!!

I love bustles too!

Ooh really, not hard to move in? You wouldn't say :D But the '70s were the worst period in time for women (not xD) being able to move/walk, so I guess this would almost seem extremely comfortable for a woman of that day and age :D

Oh okay :p I can imagine you'd be working quite long on a detailed dress like this, if you all make it yourself :p But it's certainly worth the effort/blood and tears :D It's so pretty, must be awesome to be able and make something like this ^^ If you can keep it and wear it yourself anyway :p

Yeah, well i hate it when i buy something then get it home and its so uncomfortable that it either goes back or to the back of my wardrobe lol i like to apply the same line of thinking to costumes.
Ellis liked wearing this so much i almost had to fight to get her out of it lol

The blood and tears is all part and parcel of it really, but it makes it all worth it when people like yourselves write such nice things :D

Haha yeah, the usual bad buys people waste their money on and have regret for afterwards :D
So yeah I can certainly imagine you'd give an extra thought to the used materials and petterns or such, when making something elaborate as this :p

Haha true :D Its always nice to know whether people think you're doing a good job/it can be better/it's horrible xD Because after working on something for a while, you often don't have an objective view anymore on it yourself. Only too bad most people on dA don't ever comment, just randomly fav xD So dA is not particularly your trustworthy source for that kind of information :D Except when you're veeery popular ofcourse :p That it's all pretty all of a sudden xD

Gorgeous work! I love the colors and I adore the ravens!
The style of the dress, especially in that particular shade of blue reminds me greatly of the "Wishing" gown from the stage production of The Phantom of the Opera, as well.
Absolutely exquisite!
